The Chemistry & Biochemistry Department at UT Austin has been selected by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation as one of a small number of nationwide higher education institutions to receive a Beckman Scholars Program Award. This program has been running at UT Austin since 1999 and is currently funded through 2010. This program is now open to all UT undergraduates, not just Chem/Biochem majors. The purpose of the Beckman Scholars Program is to help stimulate, encourage and support research activities in chemistry and biological sciences by exceptionally talented undergraduate students who have the capacity to become national leaders in their fields of endeavour. Each Beckman Scholar will be paid to carry out full-time research over two summers and part-time research in the intervening fall and spring. The scholarships also include funds for research expenses and student travel to scientific meetings. The Spring 2009 competition is over. Congratulations to our 2009-2010 winners, Travis Turner and Matt Welborn. This ends the current funding cycle. We hope to be successful in attracting a further round of funding, and if we do so, the Spring 2010 competition information will be available the week before Spring Break 2010. |
